The 14th edition of the African Photography Biennale, better known as the Rencontres de Bamako, was inaugurated on November 16, 2024, at the National Museum of Mali, with an exceptional event celebrating the 30th anniversary of this flagship meeting of African photography. This unmissable event, which will continue until January 16, 2025, brings together photographers from across the continent and the diaspora, in a vibrant celebration of African visual art.
« KUMA » or « the word, » invites deep reflection on the issues of speech in the African context
The central theme of this edition, « KUMA » or « the word, » inspired by the song of Salif Kéïta, the event’s sponsor, invites deep reflection on the role of speech in the African context. Whether visual or verbal, speech is presented as a powerful means of expression to address the contemporary challenges of the continent: political, social, and environmental. The photographs exhibited during the Biennale address current topics, offering personal and critical readings of African realities.
Until January 16, 2025, visitors will have the opportunity to discover these works in several exhibition spaces in Bamako and other cities in Mali, thus enhancing the event’s reach beyond the Malian capital. This is an opportunity to celebrate artistic excellence and promote cultural exchange between Africa and the rest of the world.
